Ingredients of khichdi :

  1. Rice -  1 Cup
  2. Yellow Moong Dal - 1/2 Cup
  3. Ginger Paste - 1 table spoon
  4. Cashew nuts
  5. Green Chillies - 3
  6. Curry Leaves
  7. Carrot - 1 Big
  8. Oil - 3 Spoons
  9. Water - 4 Cups
  10. Cumin seeds/Jeera
  11. Mustard Seeds
  12. Urad Dal
  13. Salt
  14. Pepper powder
  15. Garlic Cloves - approx. 20 -paste
  16. Ghee - 2 Spoons
  17. Hing / Asafoetida - a pinch
  18. Lemon Juice

Preparation of khichdi :


1) Wash the rice & yellow Moong Dal and soak it in water for around 15 Mins.
Drain the water & keep aside.

* Khichdi is to be cooked in the cooker so take the stainless steel vessel which fits in cooker.
* Since Stainless steel vessel tend to heat very quickly so better to maintain the flame on low to medium to avoid the over burn or stick to the bottom.

2) Heat a steel vessel and add 3 spoons of oil & 2 spoons of ghee, jeera, urad dal, mustard seeds, hing.

3) Once Urad dal turns golden brown add cashew, curry leaves, green chillies and allow the curry leaves to turn crisp.

4) Next add ginger garlic paste, carrot pieces and allow it to cook till the rawness of ginger garlic vanish i.e around 5 mins.

5) Once done add water to it and mix.
Add salt, pepper powder and mix well and change the flame to high, allow it to boil till the water starts bubble.

Bring it to boil

Simmer the flame and check the salt & spicy taste of pepper and if required add them accordingly.


6) Now its time to add the soaked rice & yellow moong dal to it & mix.

Change the flame to high and bring it to boil till water starts bubble.
Switch off the Flame.

7) Add sufficient amount of water in the cooker & place the vessel of Khichdi along with the lid in cooker and allow it to cook for 4 cooker whistles.


8) Remove the Khichdi vessel from the cooker and mix gently & carefully as it will be hot.

9) Now Khichdi is ready to serve.

 Serving Ideas of Khichdi :


Sprinkle lemon juice over the Khichdi to enhance the taste.
It can also be combined with karappodi.
