Mamidikaya pappu/ Mango Dal/ Kacha Aam ka Dal

Ingredients:
- Raw Mango - 1
- Green chilies - 3
- Red chili powder - 1 spoon
- turmeric - a pinch of
- Salt - as per taste
- Water
- Tur dal/Split Pigeon pea - 1 cup
- For Tempering:
- Oil - 2 spoons (approx.)
- Urad dal
- jeera
- mustard seeds
- Red chillies - 3
- Curry Leaves
- Hing/Asafoetida - a pinch of
Ingredients for Mango Dal |
- Peel the raw mango, deseed it and wash thoroughly and cut it into pieces.
- Soak Tur dal in 3 cups of water & pressure cook it for 4 whistles.
Preparation:
1) Heat the cooking vessel add oil, urad dal, jeera, mustard seeds, red chillies, curry leaves, hing to it and allow urad dal to turn to red in colour.

2) Add raw mango pieces & green chilies to the tadka/tempering & mix it.

3) Now add spices to it i.e salt, red chili powder, turmeric and give a mix.

4) Add sufficient water till the mango pieces are dipped in it and mix it.
- Allow it to cook till the mango pieces get soft.
- Do not over cook the mango pieces as it will become paste.
5) Now add the cooked tur dal to it and give a mix.
- Now you can check the taste of the mango dal & if necessary add sufficient red chili powder or salt accordingly as per taste.
- If necessary add sufficient water to the mango dal as per the consistency required.

6) Boil mango dal for 3-5 minutes.
(or bring it to boil twice by turning the flame to high till the mango dal starts bubbling and low the flame.)
- Make sure that it do not stick to bottom or get burnt.
- Mango dal is ready.

Serving Ideas :
Serve it with hot cooked rice along with Challa Mirapakayalu(Sun Dried Curd Chillies) or green chili or papad and ghee.
