Ingredients for Snake Gourd Dry Coconut Curry :

  1. Snake gourd - 1 cup pieces(approx. 250 grams)
  2. Green chilies - 3
  3. Chana Dal - approx. 4 or 5 table spoons
  4. Grated raw coconut - 3 or 4 spoons approx.
  5. Water
  6. Garlic cloves - 5 or 4 
  7. For Tadka/ Tempering:
  • Oil - 2 spoons
  • Urad dal
  • Mustard
  • Jeera
  • Curry leaves

Preparation of Snake Gourd Dry Coconut Curry :

  • Peel the snake gourd, wash it thoroughly and chop into pieces.
  • Wash the chana dal & soak it in water for around half an hour or 1 hour in a cooking vessel.




1) Place the cooking vessel containing the soaked chana dal & water on the stove and switch on the flame and par boil the dal.
(or bring it to boil twice by turning the flame to high till the water starts bubbling and low the flame.)




2) Add chopped snake gourd to the chana dal and a pinch of salt and cook.

  • Check the dal & snake gourd pieces in between with the help of spoon.
  • Make sure you don't over cook or the curry will be paste like texture.



3) Once it is cooked strain the water from dal & snake gourd pieces and keep it aside to cool down.




4) Switch on the flame & place the kadai on the stove.For tadka/tempering, add 2 spoons oil, urad dal, mustard seeds, jeera and once urad dal turns to red in colour add green chiles, curry leaves, crushed garlic and fry.

5) Now add the boiled chana dal & snake gourd pieces to the tadka/tempering and mix well.

6) Add salt to the curry give a mix.

7) Add grated raw coconut to the curry and mix well & check the taste, if necessary add sufficient salt to it & mix.

8) Place the lid on to it and allow it to cook for 2-3 mins in low to medium flame.
Check the curry in between by mixing it to make sure that it do not stick to bottom or get burnt.

9) Switch off the flame & Potlakaya Kobbari Iguru/Snake Gourd Dry Coconut Curry is ready to serve.
