Amla or
Indian gooseberry is
well known for its enormous health benefits. Gooseberry or Nellikai is
the richest source of Vitamin C and is proven to be the best immune booster. It
also increases skin health & nourish healthier hair.
With so many
health benefits should include them in our diet at least during the season when
markets are flooded with these fresh amla berry.
The amla
fruit is eaten raw or cooked into various dishes. Although this fruit is a
bit sour in taste, but it leaves sweetness on the tongue after eating it raw.
It can be
taken in the form of fresh fruit or dried, or juice (can be combined with
honey), pickle and used to prepare dal.
Amla rice
Recipe is a super easy
and healthy vegetarian dish that is loaded with the goodness of
gooseberries also known as amla. Serve it as a quick weeknight dinner
along with any raita or buttermilk.
The
tempering/tadka of the amla along with chillies, peanuts and some seasoning
when mixed along with rice, makes it a perfect dish that can be packed as tiffin
box for kids or lunch box for office.

step by step Gooseberry Rice Recipe
Ingredients for Amla Rice:
- Amla/ Indian gooseberry - 4 or 5
- Rice - 1 cup (pprox. 250 grms)
- For tadka: Oil, Mustard seeds, Jeera/Cumin seeds, Urad dal, Peanuts, Green chillies, Curry leaves.
- Salt - as per taste
- Turmeric
Preparation of Amla Rice:
1. For making of amla rice we need cooked rice, so before
starting the preparation, cook the rice in advance either by steaming or
boiling method.
Or if you have leftover cooked rice then even it can be used
for this recipe.
2. Cut the fresh amla into small pieces discarding the seeds from
it.
3. Take a mixer jar and add amla pieces, green chillies, little
salt & a pinch of turmeric and blend it into a rough coarse paste.
4. Heat a frying pan or kadai, firstly prepare tadka for that add
peanuts, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dry red chillies, urad dal, curry leaves
and saute it for few seconds.

5. Now, add the amla spice blended paste mixture. Stir to combine
all the ingredients well. Add the sufficient salt to it. Turn the heat to low
and stir well for another 5 to 10 minutes until the rawness from the amla goes
away.
6. Finally, add the cooked rice, and mix well. Check the taste for
salt.

Cover the pan with the lid and simmer on low heat for a couple of
minutes.
Turn off the heat.

Serving Idea of Amla rice:
Amla(Gooseberry) Rice goes well with papads or chips and any
other main course dishes for lunch and dinner , It also makes a perfect lunch
box recipe or brunch.
Serve Amla Rice along with raita for a weekday dinner.
Amla or
Indian gooseberry rice is delicious as well as easy to prepare rice. Made by the bigger
variety of amla. Quick and easy to make rice variety, it’s very similar to
Lemon Rice or Raw Mango Rice. Like Raw mango, we can also grate the gooseberries
and prepare it in no matter of time, Amla rice will ready! It is a healthy
kids Lunch box dish.
For some
variations we can substitute rice with any cooked millets and make this
Indian gooseberry rice much healthier. We can also use Flattened rice (poha
rice) or cooked vermicelli too instead of regular rice.
We can serve
Amla rice with any stir-fry veggies.
